VAXIRA (Racotumomab): Detailed Information and User Guide
What is VAXIRA?
VAXIRA is a cancer vaccine developed by the Center for Molecular Immunology in Cuba. It contains a monoclonal antibody called Racotumomab, which targets tumor cells by inducing an immune response against the ganglioside NeuGcGM3 antigen found on tumor cells. VAXIRA was developed specifically for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (CPCNP). This vaccine activates the patient's immune system to produce antibodies that are effective against tumor cells and can stop the cancer from progressing
Areas of Use
VAXIRA is used in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (CPCNP) whose disease progression has been stopped after first-line chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. This vaccine is administered as maintenance therapy when patients' general condition is stable. VAXIRAis used to prevent the disease from progressing again after chemotherapy and radiotherapy
Mechanism of Action
VAXIRA's main goal is to produce an antibody that recognizes the ganglioside NeuGcGM3 on the surface of tumor cells and binds to them, activating the immune system. These antibodies trigger immune responses that destroy the tumor cells. At the same time, VAXIRA exhibits antimetastatic, antiapoptotic (inducing cell death) and anti-angiogenic (preventing new blood vessel formation) effects that inhibit the growth and metastasis of tumor cells.
Treatment Process and Dosage
VAXIRA treatment consists of two phases: the induction phase and the maintenance phase.
- Induction Phase: The first five doses are administered every two weeks. Each dose contains 1 mg VAXIRA and is administered by intradermal injection into four different injection sites (deltoid, forearm, thigh, calf).
- Maintenance Phase: After the induction phase, a maintenance dose is administered every 28 days. This maintenance phase continues as long as the patient's general condition permits
Each injection dose contains 1 mg VAXIRA, which is divided into four equal subdoses (0.25 mL) and administered at different anatomical sites. For the first two doses after the start of treatment, patients are kept under observation for one hour to monitor for possible side effects. This observation is not necessary for subsequent doses if no side effects are observed in the first two doses.
Side Effects and Safety
VAXIRA is a generally well tolerated vaccine and serious side effects are rare. The most common side effects include:
- Pain and redness at the injection site
- Headache, chills, chills, sweating
- Mild shortness of breath and general discomfort
These side effects are usually seen in the first 24 hours of treatment and are of short duration and can be easily controlled with antihistamines, antipyretics and analgesics. Side effects usually decrease as treatment progresses
Contraindications and Precautions
- Hypersensitivity VAXIRA should not be used in patients who have previously shown allergic reactions to similar biological or chemical compounds.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: VAXIRA is not recommended for pregnant women, mothers who have recently given birth and breastfeeding women.
- Chronic Diseases: Use with caution in patients with severe and uncontrolled chronic diseases (e.g. uncontrolled heart failure, active infections)
