HeberFERON: Detailed Information and User Manual
What is HeberFERON?
HeberFERON is a combination of human recombinant interferon alpha 2B and interferon gamma and is a potent biotechnological product used specifically for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). The drug was developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Cuba and is used as an effective option for the treatment of many types of cancer, particularly skin cancers.
Uses of HeberFERON
- Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): HeberFERON is used especially in patients with advanced basal cell carcinoma (BCC). It is used to reduce the size of skin tumors and prevent the formation of new lesions. The treatment is recommended as a non-surgical alternative for tumors that are inoperable or located in high-risk areas (such as around the eyes, nose, ears).
- Other Tumors Heberferon can also be used for other tumors in some cases. It is considered an alternative treatment for advanced solid tumors, especially for locally invasive tumors. The drug can be combined with both chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
- Hemangiomas HeberFERON may be used to treat hemangiomas, especially in children. In pediatric patients, it is used to stop the growth of hemangiomas and reduce symptoms
Mechanism of Action
HeberFERON combines two different types of interferons (alpha 2B and gamma) to inhibit the proliferation and growth of tumor cells. By activating the immune system, these interferons target tumor cells and limit the growth of tumors. Especially in skin tumors such as BCC, this double interferon combination creates a stronger immune response, resulting in a fast and effective treatment
Treatment Process and Dosage
BCC Treatment: HeberFERON is administered by intradermal injection directly into the tumor site. For small tumors, the medicine is diluted with 1 mL (cc) of water. Treatment is usually given three times a week for 3 weeks. In advanced cases, combination therapy with chemotherapy may be recommended.
Other Tumors and Indications: HeberFERON can also be administered as intramuscular injection in tumors other than basal cell carcinoma. Duration of treatment and dosage are determined according to the type of tumor and general condition of the patient.
Side Effects and Safety
HeberFERON is generally well tolerated, but some patients may experience mild to moderate side effects. Common side effects include:
- Fever and chills
- Joint and muscle pain (arthralgia, myalgia)
- Fatigue and weakness
- Mild allergic reactions (itching, rash)
- Decrease in blood values (leukopenia, thrombocytopenia).
Side effects usually decrease over the course of treatment and in most cases treatment does not need to be interrupted. However, if serious side effects occur, the dosage may need to be reduced or treatment may need to be stopped.
Contraindications
- Autoimmune Diseases: HeberFERON should not be used in patients with autoimmune diseases. This medicine may exacerbate such diseases because it activates the immune system.
- Heart Disease: Use with caution in individuals with serious heart disease. Fever and chills, which are common side effects of interferons, can exacerbate heart problems.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The use of HeberFERON is not recommended in pregnant and breastfeeding women. A risk-benefit analysis should be performed before starting treatment.
